He is writing a salutation on The Man with the Hoe and how it is a message of tremandous importance to this land. Sending copy of Glad of Earth and appreciate the reaction to it that Mr. M wrote. It is hard for young writers to be recoginzed. He was pleased that the Buffalo News gave him over a column about his book.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
